Every third Saturday of March is celebrated as International Sports Car Racing Day. It was fitting then that the 2022 Formula 1 season kicks off on the same weekend with the dramatic Bahrain Grand Prix. On this occasion, we have decided to list 6 of the most emblematic car races in the world.
The Indianapolis 500 or Indy 500 is an annual auto race that takes place in the United States during Memorial Day weekend. Part of the IndyCar series, it is one of motor racing’s greatest spectacles and has been taking place since 1911. It is one of three races that form the Triple Crown of motorsport, which has only been won only by the British driver Graham Hill. Some of the most unique aspects of the Indy 500 are a 33-car line-up for the start, the annual chant of “Back Home Again in Indiana” and the winner drinking a bottle of milk after receiving the trophy.
24 hours of Le Mans
No doubt you have already heard of this one. The 24 Hours of Le Mans race is the oldest active endurance race in the world and is also part of the Triple Crown of motorsport. Held at the Circuit de la Sarthe in France, it is essentially won by the car that covers the greatest distance in 24 hours. However, there are different categories of cars competing here rather than all cars competing.
Monaco Grand Prix
This is the race that completes the Triple Crown of motorsport. The annual Monaco Grand Prix is part of the Formula 1 competition and it is what defines the small country that is Monaco. It is a street circuit which is one of the most demanding in Formula 1, as it features a narrow course with many drops and tight turns as well as a tunnel. Each year the race attracts the who’s who of the world to the adjoining marina which is nestled with yachts.
The pride and joy of Nordic racing tradition, Rally Finland is part of the World Rally Championship. This race is so difficult for non-Nordic riders to master that since its launch in 1951, only seven riders from countries other than Finland or Sweden have won it.
Australia also hosts an iconic annual motor race in the form of the Bathurst 1000, which takes place at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales. Organized since 1960, this race includes a track made up of public roads, but its elevation is a challenge for the pilots as well as the tight turns and the narrow roads. This V8 Supercar race has been renamed the Supercars Championship and is still a hotly contested event.
The final iconic racing event we want to bring to your attention today is the Daytona 500, which is one of NASCAR’s most prestigious events. Taking place in Daytona Beach, Florida, the 500-mile race is one of four “restriction plate” races on NASCAR’s schedule, meaning a device is inserted into the engine’s intake to limit its power due to safety concerns.
